The Green Bay Packers are one of the youngest teams in the NFL. The latter half of the 2023 season proved to be extremely successful for Green Bay. In their final 10 games they went to 7-3. That included three consecutive wins to end the regular season that wound up qualifying them for the post season, then a massive win over the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round.
One of the young weapons that Love got in rhythm with was 22-year-old Dontayvion Wicks. Now Wicks is looking forward to something big in 2024 and beyond.
WR Dontayvion Wicks Gets Huge Update For The Green Bay Packers
Les Spellman, Wicks’ speed coach, is helping him prepare for his second NFL season.
There are several NFL stars Spellman has worked with, including Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence. According to Spellman, the league hasn’t even begun to see what Wicks can do:
My favorite thing as a coach is knowing a guy’s about to take OVER — but nobody knows yet. It’s like your sitting on this big secret. Then BOOM the world finds out and they go crazy.
And we just sit and laugh because it was just planning. It wasn’t random. It wasn’t luck. It wasn’t the “perfect” situation. We fought for it. For years. Then we do it again. We increase value. This game is about getting the highest value early then increasing it even more until they have NO choice but to meet your demands.
We’ve done it over and over again but for some reason everyone comments how lucky or perfect the situation was. So I guess I’m writing all this just so y’all are on notice NOW. HES NEXT.”
Wicks Had An Incredible First Season With The Packers
In his rookie season, Wicks caught 67 percent of his 61 targets for 14.8 yards per catch with five touchdowns. Wicks’ role expanded during the second half of the season, becoming Jordan Love’s reliable go-to target often during pivotal moments.
In third down situations, Wicks caught 70 percent of his targets at 14.1 yards per catch, with 13 of his 14 receptions going for first downs.
“He’s always asking questions, always asking if he’s in the right spot,” said quarterback Jordan Love of Wicks late in the season. “I think he’s a really good route-runner, really shifty guy, catches the ball really well and he’s making plays after the catch.
He’s getting a lot of YAC right now. He’s just a tough guy. He’s doing a lot of really good things.”
It will be exciting to see what 2024 and beyond has for Wicks and this explosive Packers offense.
