Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs is proving to be the top wide receiver on the team despite Christian Watson returning on Thursday night. Despite the 34-20 loss on Thursday night to the Detroit Lions, Doubs caught nine passes for 95 yards receiving. He averaged 10.6 yards per catch in the contest.
As for Watson, he only caught two passes for 25 yards receiving and a touchdown. He averaged 12.5 yards per catch. This was his first game of the season because he missed the first three games with a hamstring injury. Some could argue that Christian Watson could have used another week of rest.
The Packers don’t play again until next Monday night on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders, and it would have been a perfect time for him to make his season debut rather than Thursday night. Watson had more receiving yards than Doubs a season ago with 611-425, but is Romeo Doubs possibly taking over as the top wide receiver on the Green Bay Packers over Christian Watson?
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love seems more comfortable with Romeo Doubs compared to Christian Watson at the current moment
Packers quarterback Jordan Love appears to be more comfortable with throwing the football to Doubs at the moment rather than Watson. Those preseason reps mattered for those two football players. Yes, it was his first appearance of the season, but he should have been targeted more in the first half than he was. Christian Watson did not have a catch until the second half. His touchdown reception came in the third quarter on a 1-yard reception thrown by quarterback Jordan Love.
Green Bay will need Watson to have more targets in order to be successful. He can not have two receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown every week, or they won’t win a bunch of games. Romeo Doubs has been the main guy in the receiving game for the first four weeks of the season. With 95 yards receiving, it feels like he is inching closer to a 100-yard receiving game.
Rookie Jayden Reed caught three passes for 55 yards receiving and had 18.3 yards per catch in the game. He has been good for the Green Bay Packers but has a case of the drops early on this season. Reed will be a perfect number-three receiver. In order for this offense to hum, Christian Watson will need to be much better, but Romeo Doubs is the number one receiver in this offense for now unless otherwise noted.
