The Green Bay Packers have made roster moves big and small this 2024 offseason. From the massive signings of Josh Jacobs and Xavier McKinney to the under-the-radar re-signings of Keisean Nixon and AJ Dillon, the Green Bay Packers are setting up their roster for not only now but the future. After an up-and-down 2023 campaign that ended strong with just a three-point loss on the brink of the NFC Championship, the Green Bay Packers look to put the pieces in place to win a Super Bowl.
Green Bay Packers Re-Sign Corey Ballentine
Corey Ballentine is a 27-year-old corner and special teamer drafted in the sixth round of 2019 to the New York Jets. After struggling to find his place early in his career, it appears he may have found a home in Green Bay.
Packers bring back Corey Ballentine on a much richer deal than I would have assumed.
$1.28M Base ($155K over minimum)
$500K Signing Bonus
$220K Per-Game Bonuses
$100K Workout Bonus.I had expected a veteran salary benefit deal, but this is a solid 1-year, $2.1M contract. pic.twitter.com/vWfraHPfaA
— Ken Ingalls – Packers Cap 💰 (@KenIngalls) March 18, 2024
The 5’11 196lb corner has worked his way off of the Green Bay Packers practice squad in 2022 into a core special teamer for the back half of the 2022 season. In 2023 he continued as a special teamer as well as getting numerous snaps at cornerback when injuries hit the secondary. Last season Ballentine saw over 600 snaps between corner and special teams.
In his 2023 season, Corey Ballentine pulled together a 60.1 PFF grade along with seven pass breakups and one interception. Ballentine’s seven breakups were good for second on the team and more than superstar corner Jaire Alexander. In week 17 Ballentine secured his first interception against Vikings rookie Jarran Hall in a blowout.
With the contract given to Ballentine, a few things can be assessed. Corey Ballentine likely had other teams interested in him, likely due to his growth as a corner and value as a special teamer. The Green Bay Packers believe in him as not only a special teamer but crucial cornerback depth. And the Packers certainly believe he will make the roster. If Ballentine somehow does not make the roster, he will account for 500 thousand against the cap.
This re-signing shows that the Green Bay Packers believe in the personnel decisions they made last year, and hope they come together for better results and more wins under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
