The Green Bay Packers players and their fans have a bond that is not very common in sports. Perhaps it is because of the small market, but players on the Packers seem to interact a lot more with their fans than players do with their fanbases. This is both a blessing and a curse in many ways. In a sense, it is reminiscent of the Green Bay neighborhood kids getting together for a pickup football game in Bart Starr’s front yard, creating memories that have lasted and will last for generations.
On the other hand, it can also be a reminder of the vileness spewed at new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers when he took over for Brett Favre, or that Jordan Love received when he committed the horrendous crime of being drafted.

Too often, we forget that social media posts often lack context. Professional athletes, like everyone else, use Twitter, Instagram, whatever to document their personal thoughts and lives. Believe or not, every single post a player makes is not directed at the team, another team, a player, or (and this may be a bold claim) has anything to do with sports at all.

Green Bay Packers Cornerback Rasul Douglas Claps Back at a Fan
For month, Packers fans have wondered if the team will bring back veteran safety Adrian Amos. Even though he struggled in the last two seasons, Amos is a popular player among fans and an incredible leader. However, it appears as if the door as closed on his return, as the Packers signed Jonathan Owens, a former starting safety with the Houston Texans, to a contract on Friday (Owens’ wife, Olympian Simone Biles, broke the news on Instagram).
Shortly after the signing was announced, current Green Bay cornerback Rasul Douglas posted this on Twitter:
They just doing anything now smh 🤦🏾♂️
— rasul (@RasulEra) May 12, 2023
Now, remember that thing from earlier, about athletes’ posts not always having to do with their team, or even sports in general? Well, some fans took this post as a shot at the organization for signing Owens instead of Amos:
Packers Twitter about to assume https://t.co/r2bpfxTuuC

Man I don’t wanna assume but 😬😬 https://t.co/7kCWYEapIP

🤨🤔 Jonathan Owens shade? 🤷🏽♂️ https://t.co/uoZgwVcnuF

Idk what this is about, but let’s hope isn’t now about todays signing, cause that would be lame as heck https://t.co/Ej1EFVKsCp
— Austin Klokus (@AustinKlokus) May 12, 2023
And then there was this one:
If this is about the new S addition…
This is… weird https://t.co/ZQyN1Q6mom
— GBP Daily – Rob Westerman lll (@GBPdaily) May 12, 2023
And Douglas was not going to take that:
Bro you’re weird . This twitter . I ain’t talking about that . Sad that that’s the first thing that be coming to y’all mind .
— rasul (@RasulEra) May 12, 2023
A little backtracking was not going to help:
Don’t bro . I’m a realist you can ask me . And plus I played with bro so and don’t have anything bad to say
— rasul (@RasulEra) May 12, 2023
Douglas spent some time with the Houston Texans, Owens’ old team, during training camp in 2021.
In case you are wondering, Douglas never did say what his original Tweet was about. But here’s the thing: he doesn’t need to. Fans should not assume the context of a Tweet, or assume the worst about a player in a situation like this.
