The Green Bay Packers are committed to Jordan Love for the 2023 season. That was evident in the new contract that Love signed. Even with the addition of fifth-round draft pick QB Sean Clifford, the backup quarterback role remains unanswered. 2018 seventh-round pick Danny Etling will be battling it out with Clifford, however, there is one name out there that the Packers could be interested in trading for that would provide a huge boost to the backup quarterback position.
Green Bay Packers Named In Significant Ryan Tannehill Trade
According to Kenneth Teape:
It would be a surprise if the Packers went into the regular season with such little experience on their roster at the most important position in the game. Whether it is via free agency or a trade, Green Bay should look into bringing in a veteran quarterback.
One player that could pique their interest is Ryan Tannehill of the Tennessee Titans. Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports named the Packers as one of the logical landing spots for Tannehill should the Titans look to move on from him.
“Tannehill is more likely to sit tight as a placeholder in Tennessee on the final year of his contract, but at a steep salary, with the Titans just trading up to draft Will Levis at No. 33 overall, it’s very possible the team could solicit offers for its incumbent starter. Coach Mike Vrabel hasn’t committed to Tannehill being on the roster come Week 1, and while the Titans would certainly be more likely to contend for another playoff run if he stays, it’s clear new general manager Ran Carthon is thinking about the future.”
Embarking on a rebuild of their own after trading up and selecting Will Levis in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Titans could move on from their incumbent starter. Nothing is off the table in Tennessee as they start to remake the roster in Carthon’s vision for the team.
Tannehill wouldn’t have the opportunity to start in Green Bay with Love there, but he would be the clear-cut backup. Should anything happen to Love, the Packers’ season would be over on the spot; having someone such as Tannehill to turn to in the unfortunate event Love has to miss time would keep them afloat.
It would be interesting to hear what the Tennessee Titans would want in return for Tannehill. He has been their starter for the last four seasons. With the exception of Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love being drafted, the Packers don’t have a history of committing many resources to the backup quarterback spot. If the Titans were to ask for any kind of premium draft picks, the Packers would quickly back out.
