One of the top priorities for the Green Bay Packers right now is finding a new defensive coordinator. With Joe Barry getting handed his walking papers by the Packers, who are looking in a different direction for their stop unit, there have been several names being mentioned as possible replacements. One name that has consistently come up even before Barry got sacked as a potential defensive maestro for Green Bay is Ejiro Evero, who is currently the defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers.
Major Obstacles That Could Hinder A Potential Ejiro Evero Hire By The Green Bay Packers
Evero was among those who lost to Barry in the Packers’ 2021 search for a DC, but now that Barry is gone, the door is open again for Evero to be a coach in Green Bay. Well, not so fast. For one, Evero is eyeing a promotion in Carolina, as he just finished his second interview with the Panthers. There’s no question which job Evero would choose between a DC gig for the Green Bay Packers and a head-coaching job in Carolina. And even if he fails to get the dream job in Carolina, he can still be prevented from linking up with the Packers.

LaFleur reportedly chose Barry over Evero in 2021, and now Evero, 43, is getting head coach interviews as the Panthers’ defensive coordinator. If he doesn’t get a head job, the Panthers’ new head coach could still block Evero from interviewing with the Packers for a lateral job if Evero is retained as defensive coordinator.
Carolina was a relatively bright spot for the Panthers in 2023. With the Panthers’ offense breaking down nonstop on the field, Evero’s defense did its best to make the team look good on its end of the field as much as possible. The Panthers ranked just 29th in the league with 24.5 points allowed per game, but fourth in total defense (293.0).
