MarShawn Lloyd had quite of a journey through high school and college to reach the point of being drafted by the Green Bay Packers. Turns out, the rookie’s mother played a big role in making his current football career a reality as he’s set to play for head coach Matt LaFleur and and alongside quarterback Jordan Love.
Lloyd started his football journey as a student enrolled in DeMatha Catholic High School when he was picked to play in the 2020 Under Armour All-American Game. After becoming a five-star recruit, he committed to play college football for South Carolina.
Unfortunately, Lloyd missed his first year there due a torn ACL in 2020. He made his return sometime in 2021 to play 12 games as a backup. During that period, the running back rushed 64 times for a total of 228 yards and notched a single touchdown along the way.
After playing three seasons for South Carolina, Lloyd entered the transfer portal and joined Southern California’s college football program in 2023. In the 11 games he played for the USC Trojans, he had a total of 114 rush attempts and averaged 7.1 yards per attempt while tallying nine touchdowns. Ultimately, he was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2024 NFL Draft using the 88th pick.
Green Bay Packers Rookie MarShawn Lloyd Shares Mother’s Impact on His Football Career
After getting selected by the Packers, Lloyd shared his football journey and how his mother played a huge part in it. In an article written by Wes Hodkiewicz for the Packers’ official website:
“”It’s the best feeling in the world,” MarShawn said. “My mom has done so much stuff, things I may not have wanted to do at the time, but she forced me to do it, and it’s put me in the right position each time. Now, her son is a Green Bay Packer, which is pretty crazy,” Hodkiewicz wrote.
Lloyd is projected to provide Green Bay with a spark on offense using his athleticism, speed, and the potential of being a pass catcher. He is also expected to contribute right from the get-go when the new NFL season starts soon.
It remains to be seen how Lloyd will fit in with Love and company. What’s certain, though, is he has the potential to help the Packers get over the hump and surpass what they achieved last season.
