One week ago, it was reported that the Chicago Bears were interested in interviewing former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy for the same position in their organization. However, as McCarthy was still under contract with the Dallas Cowboys, they needed to request permission to speak with him. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones denied their request.
This, of course, led to speculation that the former Packers coach might return to Dallas on a new contract. However, it was announced today that Jones and McCarthy mutually agreed to part ways.
In a statement released to the public, Jones said of his now former coach, “Throughout Mike McCarthy’s tenure here, including the last several weeks, I have been very complimentary of the job he has done. That has applied to our record over that time period, our team unity and culture, Mike’s qualifications and track record of success, and on a personal level as a tremendous human being. I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure.
He later added, “prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction.”
Former Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy Is Still Generating Interest from the Chicago Bears
Despite being denied permission to speak to McCarthy last week, the Bears are still interested in speaking with him about their head coach opening.
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Chicago and McCarthy are expected to meet this week, and as soon as Wednesday:
Rules prohibit any interviews to be scheduled yet, but former Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy is expected to interview this week, and as soon as Wednesday, for the Bears head coaching job, sources tell @toddarcher and me.
The Saints also are expected to have interest in McCarthy.

As Schefter notes, the New Orleans Saints are also expected to be interested in interviewing McCarthy for their head coaching job.
Other vacancies around the NFL (except Dallas, who apparently have already spoken to Deion Sanders) include:
- Las Vegas Raiders
- New York Jets
- Jacksonville Jaguars
The New England Patriots did have an opening, but have already hired Mike Vrable.
In addition to McCarthy, Chicago has also requested permission to interview Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich.
