The Green Bay Packers moved on from the franchise’s leading scorer this off-season. After more than a decade and a half, the Packers will now introduce a fresh face to their kicking game. The team chose not to extend the contract of seasoned veteran Mason Crosby and has made a bold move in the 2023 NFL draft choosing Anders Carlson in the sixth round to take charge of field goals and extra points. Now Crosby is being connected to one of their biggest NFC rivals.
Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Mason Crosby Named As Top Candidate For The San Francisco 49ers
Jordan Sigler of Wisconsin Sports Heroics highlighted the San Francisco 49ers as one of the most likely teams to target Mason Crosby this off-season:
The San Francisco 49ers, much like the Packers, let a veteran kicker go last season in lieu of putting the ball on a rookie’s legs. The 49ers moved on from Robby Gould. They drafted Jake Moody in the third round.
Moody didn’t play well in his first preseason game with the 49ers. He went 0-for-2 on field goals. He did nail his only extra-point attempt.
While the 49ers might not want to move on from Moody just yet, they could bring in Crosby as a safety net in training camp.
The 49ers have lofty aspirations this season. They’re in the hunt to make the Super Bowl this year after losing in the NFC Championship Game in January. In a sport with tight margins, the 49ers can’t afford to shave points with a rookie kicker who’s got the yips.
Packers Fans React To Mason Crosby Being Linked To The 49ers
The Packers hold a 4-2 record over the San Francisco 49ers over the last 10 years, however, fans will never forget being bounced from the playoffs twice to those Colin Kaepernick led teams in the early 2010s. Seeing the possibly he could join the 49ers, Packers fans reacted accordingly on social media.
