The Green Bay Packers made the controversial decision to move on from kicker Mason Crosby this past offseason. A sixth round pick by the Packers in 2007, Crosby went on to win a Super Bowl with the team in 2010 and became the franchise’s all-time leader in points scored and games played. To say that the decision to move on from him was met with some displeasure from fans would be an understatement.
Following the 2022 NFL season, Crosby was not signed by any teams. While he maintained his desire to play, no NFL franchise brought him in to training camp or gave him any opportunity to continue his career. Throughout the course of this season, Crosby was given workouts by various teams, but remained a free agent.
Last week, the Los Angeles Rams brought Crosby in for a workout. In the days following, he was signed to their practice squad. Prior to their game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Crosby was added to their gameday roster.
However, Crosby was a healthy inactive for the game and did not see the field. Today, two days after the Rams’ loss, Los Angeles made the decision to release him.

Unfortunately, it appears that Crosby was not the answer at kicker that the Rams were looking for. Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Los Angeles had released the long-time Packers kicker:

After 258 consecutive games with the Packers (a franchise record), Crosby was not activated for the one game he spent with the Rams organization. With four weeks left in the season, it is difficult to see him getting another opportunity.
Rams kicker Lucas Havrisik, who has struggled this season, was 3/3 on field goal attempts on Sunday, including one from 51 yards out.
The Green Bay Packers Will Not Pursue Mason Crosby

Earlier today, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was asked if he was still committed to 2023 NFL Draft pick Anders Carlson. In their loss to the New York Giants, Carlson was 3/4 with a miss coming from about 45 yards out. He came back from that miss to drill one from 48 yards out.
“Absolutely,” LaFleur said in response to the question about sticking with Carlson. He noted that it was impressive that Carlson came back from the missed field goal to make one from a longer distance. He said that Carlson just needs to find a way to be more consistent with what makes him successful.
For the record, Carlson has made 80% of his field goals this season. In 2007, Crosby made 79.5% of his kicks. In fact, Crosby did not make over 80% of his kicks in a season until his fifth year in Green Bay. In his sixth year, Crosby made just 63.7% of his kicks.
