The Green Bay Packers find themselves in the middle of a tight NFC playoff race. Sitting at 6-6 prior to their Monday Night Showdown with the New York Giants, the Packers control their own destiny to the post-season.
The future of the running back position is certainly up in the air in Green Bay. AJ Dillon receiving a second contract seems to be doubtful. Aaron Jones has certainly been the heart and soul of the Packers’ offense in recent years, however, his age (29), his cap hit in 2024 ($17M), and his recent injury history has muddied the waters. Would the Packers consider a younger running back to replace Jones and continue the youth movement?
The Green Bay Packers Could Add Oregon Running Back Mar’Keise “Bucky” Irving To Replace Aaron Jones
Sayre Bedinger of Fansided annotated how this addition could be huge for the Packers’ offense:
From one version of green and yellow to another, Bucky Irving has been one of the most elusive backs in all of college football, and one of the fastest as well.
Irving has drawn some comparisons to Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco for his ability to run with physicality and toughness despite not being the biggest back. I think with his speed and pass-catching ability, the idea of pairing him up with Aaron Jones and/or AJ Dillon in Green Bay next season would be a lot of fun.
Here is a snapchat of Irving’s season in 2023:

Will The Packers Draft A Running Back In 2024?
The last time the Packers drafted a running back prior to the seventh round was 2020 (AJ Dillon). Four years later may be the perfect time to do it considering the franchise-altering changes that have occurred over the last two off-seasons.
Adding a dual threat running back would be the best option. While it is extremely unlikely that the Packers will replace Jones’ value to the team with a rookie, having a dual threat would be the best shot at that.
The young core of Jordan Love, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Luke Musgrave, and Tucker Kraft could use a young running back to grow with over the next 5+ years. Irving would fit that role.
