It’s been two weeks since Malik Willis took over as Green Bay Packers quarterback, and it’s been a phenomenal run for the former Tennessee Titan so far.
He immediately quelled the doubts creeping in the minds of many Packers fans with the quality of performances he’s turned in over the past two weeks. While it’s important to note that the teams he played against aren’t the most dangerous squads, his performances show that he has enough about him to change people’s minds.
Week 4 will be a huge test for Willis if Love still isn’t available to play, and LaFleur would also rather have Love starting against a division rival. It’s how the QB1 performs against division opponents that will determine whether the Packers have a great shot at making a deep postseason run or not.
However, Willis’ performances last week will be encouraging to Packers fans who want to take down an indomitable Minnesota defense.
Malik Willis showcased an improved performance during Green Bay Packers’ Week 3 win
Acme Packing Company’s Dusty Evely wrote about how well Willis performed for the Packers during the time he was playing with them. He noted that while he still played conservatively in a run-focused game plan, he still showed off more of his skills:
When they asked Willis to throw, it was with a more varied passing attack than we saw against the Colts. Yes, there were a decent amount of screens (5 screen calls for the game, which is not counting the RPO screen tags they had), but they also had him throwing downfield like he wasn’t doing against the Colts.
Yes, there was a decent amount behind the line, but they also drew up a couple of slot-fade shots for him to take (one of them coming on a big 3rd down to Christian Watson on the first drive). His ADOT (Average Depth of Target) of 7.1 was nearly a yard higher than the ADOT of 6.2 he posted in Week 2 (per RBSDM).
The most important thing Willis did was keep the ball safe. For the second straight game, Willis had 0 turnover-worthy plays (per PFF).
The Green Bay Packers will still have a tough game on their hands if Willis will still be the one playing under center against a strong Minnesota defense. However, the Packers will always have a shot at winning as long as Willis keeps his sharp form.
