The Green Bay Packers will enter the 2024 off-season trying to take their roster from “playoff caliber” to “Super Bowl Contender.” The 2023 season proved that the Packers refused to enter a rebuild mode after the Aaron Rodgers trade.
One major contract adjustment is expected to happen this off-season that will help with adding more weapons to the team.
The Green Bay Packers Are Expected To Rework Massive Contract On The Defensive Side Of The Ball
Prior to the start of the new league year on March 13, the Packers are currently approximately $6.9 million over the cap. To free up some additional spending flexibility for Green Bay, veteran defensive tackle Kenny Clark could very well sign a new extension.
According to Spotrac, Clark will count $27.4 million against the cap in 2024; however, he could command a three-year extension worth $51 million. Matt Lombardo thinks this extension could happen this off-season:
Without signing a new deal, only veteran offensive tackle David Bakhtiari is projected to count more against the cap than Clark is ahead of the 2024 campaign. Likewise, Clark’s current deal currently makes up 10.94 percent of the Packers’ cap percentage.
Still one of the premier players at his position, Clark produced 7.5 sacks, underscoring his dominance as an interior pass-rusher, while adding 44 total tackles. Clark made his third Pro Bowl appearance in 2023, replacing Javon Hargrave, who made the Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers.
If the Packers do wind up signing Clark to an extension, it would mark the second consecutive offseason that Green Bay reworked the veteran’s contract.
Just last offseason, the Packers freed up $11 million in cap space by converting $13.835 million into a signing bonus.
At the time Clark’s deal was restructured, Green Bay had just $6.4 million in cap space, so reworking the Pro Bowl defensive lineman’s deal was as pivotal to creating spending flexibility last offseason as it could prove to be once free agency begins this year.
Kenny Clark Has Been A Pillar For The Packers’ Defense
Kenny Clark was named to the 2024 Pro Bowl Games following one of his best seasons to date.
Since being drafted by the Green Bay Packers out of UCLA in 2016, Clark has played an integral role in the Packers’ defense.
Clark was named to the Pro Bowl team for the third time in his career (2019, 2021 and now 2023.)
It was a career-high 7.5 sacks, 16 QB hits, 2 forced fumbles and 9 tackles for a loss that earned him this honor this season.
We see around the league (notably Chris Jones for the Kansas City Chiefs) that nose tackles can change a game on any given snap. Clark would not only be worth the extension, but huge for the future of the Packers’ defense.
