The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings had an interesting 2023 campaign. The Vikings had championship aspirations when the season started, however, numerous injuries derailed their season. The Packers shocked everyone by not only making the playoffs in 2023, but advancing to the Divisional Round.
As teams start preparing for the 2024 season, the Vikings may be forced to move on from the best player on their team.
The Green Bay Packers May Not Have To Face Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson Twice A Season?
Andrew Holleran highlighted what exactly is taking place in Minnesota:
The Minnesota Vikings are expected to try to bring back Kirk Cousins in free agency, but will Justin Jefferson be on the team moving forward?
Minnesota is reportedly now considering a blockbuster trade offer for Jefferson, as he’s expected to negotiate for a historic wide receiver contract extension.
There is reportedly growing “steam” that Jefferson could be traded in a blockbuster move.
Pro Football Talk believes that Jefferson’s contract demands got even higher on Friday:
The Vikings probably wish they’d gotten receiver Justin Jefferson signed to a second contract before Friday. Whether they ever will remains to be seen.
The one fundamental truth about giving one of your own great players the contract he deserves is that the price will always go up if you wait. Always. As of Friday, with the salary cap shooting to $255.4 million per team, Jefferson’s price goes up even higher.
But perhaps the Vikings will not be the team that ends up paying Jefferson his record-setting contract.
It’ll be interesting to see where Jefferson lands this offseason, if he ends up being put on the trading block.
Packers Fans Wouldn’t Mind Not Seeing Jefferson Twice A Year
Justin Jefferson has recorded 34 catches for 537 yards and four touchdowns in seven games against the Packers in his career.
While those aren’t necessarily dominant numbers, he is able to take over a game on any given Sunday. The Packers have only surrendered more than 100 yards in a game twice to Jefferson (2021 and 2022).
The return that Minnesota would get for a receiver like Jefferson would be massive. It may even give them firepower to move up in the draft and take their next quarterback of the future.
