Ever since the franchises traded Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love has been on an upward trend as the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback. While his ascent has been incredible lately, there was a time when the decision to draft the star wasn’t a popular one.
Just this season, Love has risen to the challenge and led the NFL’s youngest roster to a deep run in the postseason. At the peak, Green Bay faced the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers and almost eliminated the Brock Purdy-squad.
Unfortunately, several costly mistakes led to the Packers getting eliminated by San Francisco. As a result, the franchise will aim to improve during the offseason by targeting experienced veterans or infusing young talent via the upcoming NFL draft. In any case, it’s going to be an exciting time for the team next season.
Green Bay Packers CEO Shares Why Jordan Love Was Drafted in 2020 and the Criticisms That Came With It
Speaking of Love, there was a time when choosing the quarterback in the 2020 Draft didn’t do the Packers any favors from critics. CEO and president Mark Murphy shares what happened behind the scenes and how the team navigated through the backlash in his monthly column.
“I do give Brian (and his team) tremendous credit for having the courage of his convictions in drafting Jordan Love. They did their research on Jordan and knew that he had excellent potential. Jordan’s draft year was in the middle of COVID, so things were very different. I remember Brian letting me know that we were going to trade up to pick Jordan.
I knew that we had him rated highly and was impressed with the process that Brian and his staff had followed. I know we were criticized for the pick at the time, but Brian felt strongly that it would be a good pick in the long-term,” Murphy wrote.
It’s safe to say that the Packers’ decision to draft Love has yielded great results for the franchise. With the momentum he got from an incredible run this year, next season will certainly be something to look forward to for Green Bay fans.
