Looking at the Future after Packers Draft Jordan Love

For many Packers fans they thought they were sent back to 2005 when the Packers selected Aaron Rodgers while 36 year old Brett Favre was still quarterbacking the team. Last night the Packers traded up four spots to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. Many fans took to social media complaining about how the move won’t help the Packers win now. However, looking forward the pick may be one that pays off big.

There will not be a quarterback controversy in Green Bay by any means. Aaron Rodgers is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and was one game from taking his team to super bowl LIV. The pick also doesn’t necessarily mean the Rodgers era is over. Earlier this year Rodgers said that if Green Bay does draft a quarterback they won’t be beating him out anytime soon. Love gets the opportunity to sit and learn from number 12 just as Rodgers did with Favre. The Packers also had to be thinking about 2017 when Rodgers went down and lack of talent at quarterback saw a season get wasted.

    Precedent

Many fans are under the assumption that the Packers are officially moving from Rodgers. However, this is not the case. Brian Gutekunst stated last night that the team expects to have Rodgers for a while “competing for championships.” There isn’t even a guarantee that Love becomes the successor, but it is unfair to judge right now. Just because Rodgers took over after Favre there are other outcomes in such situations. In 2014 the New England patriots drafted who many thought would be Tom Brady’s successor in Jimmy Garoppolo. Brady won two championships and Garoppolo was traded in 2017. If Rodgers goes on to lead Green Bay to two championships and continues to play at a high level, the Packers will possibly have a guy ready to go if he chooses to retire. If he doesn’t retire, the Packers can still get return for Love via trade.

    Overall

The outcome of the pick won’t be determined until after Love gets a chance. He is a very talented passer who will now get to learn from one of the best to ever lace up. The future cant be determined, but the Packers made a pick the believe was best for their franchise.

    As Always

What do you think about the Love pick. Do you think hes the future?
