The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles both hope to compete for a playoff berth in 2024. In 2023, the two teams seemed to have opposite seasons. The Eagles started the season red hot and were one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl for a much of the season. However, a late season collapse coupled with a Wild Card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers capped a disappointing end to a promising season.
The Packers on the other hand started the season on a rough note. At 3-6, many had counted them out of the playoff conversation. The latter half of the season showed just how resilient the team was. That resiliency brought them within three points of the NFC Championship game.
As the 2024 off-season kicks off, the Eagles may be targeting a 50-game-starter from Green Bay.
The Philadelphia Eagles Thought To Be After Long Time Green Bay Packers Starter
ESPN reporter Anthony DiBona reported why the move would make sense for Philadelphia:
Following Jason Kelce’s retirement and Cam Jurgens moving over to center, it would make sense for the Eagles to target Jon Runyan Jr. in free agency.
In 30 career starts at right guard for the Green Bay Packers, Runyan Jr. allowed just four sacks.
He has plenty of NFL experience at both guard spots with 1,611 snaps at left guard and 1,709 snaps at right guard.
Given that his father played nine seasons for the Eagles from 2000-2008, a return to Philadelphia could make sense for both sides.
Would The Packers Let Jon Runyan Jr Walk?
Despite Jon Runyan Jr.’s contract expiring, the 2020 draft pick is not guaranteed to depart Green Bay this offseason. The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman reported that Runyan’s representatives met with Packers officials during the NFL Scouting Combine and the two sides have mutual interest in re-signing him.
Since he was selected in the sixth round of the 2020 draft, Runyan has started 50 of the Packers’ last 51 regular-season games, as well as three playoff games. He played over 3,000 offensive snaps between 2021 and 2023.
The Packers love to invest in their offensive line, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see them retain one of their own.
