The Green Bay Packers have a huge opportunity this off-season. The offense has already shown they can put up points against any defense in the NFL. They may be just one or two pieces away from taking their game from playoff caliber to championship caliber.
Aaron Jones once again proved just how important he is to the Packers’ offense in the latter half of the 2023 season. He not only ended the season on a 5-game streak of rushing for 100 yards, but he scored three touchdowns in their dominant Wild Card win over the Dallas Cowboys. While nothing in guaranteed, it would be shocking to see the Packers move on from Jones this off-season. There is mutual interest on both sides to get a reworked contract done.
However, having Jones in the backfield with another bonafide running back could do wonders for his longevity not only late in the season, but for his career. That is the position the Packers could find themselves in.
The Green Bay Packers Could Pair Aaron Jones With Another Bonafide Starting Running Back
Nick Geddes of On3 reported on the expected status of Cincinnati Bengals Running Back Joe Mixon:
For the first time in his NFL career, Joe Mixon could be set to have a new home.
According to Matthew Berry of NBC Sports, the Cincinnati Bengals plan to release the star running back, bringing an end to his tenure with the team after seven seasons. Berry said he heard of Mixon’s fate while spending time at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this past week.
“I was told Joe Mixon would be released,” Berry wrote.
Mixon is 27-years-old and is coming off a 1,000 yard – 9 touchdown season. Being part of a 1-2 punch in Green Bay could be massive for Aaron Jones, Jordan Love, and the entire Packers offense.
Would The Green Bay Packers Invest In The Running Back Position?
The Packers shocked everyone last season when they were one of the two teams (Miami Dolphins) that showed real interest in trading for Indianapolis Colts Running Back Jonathan Taylor (25-years-old).
With AJ Dillon’s future in Green Bay in serious doubt, it is very likely the Packers will invest in the running back position this off-season. With the Draft widely believed to be defense (and possibly offensive line) focused, turning to free agency for a 27-year-old running back may be the answer.
Keeping Aaron Jones as healthy as possible throughout the season for the impact he can make in the playoffs is a massive opportunity. Joe Mixon could be that answer.
