The Green Bay Packers continue to be a household name for teams who are expected to be active in free agency this off-season. The completely overhauled defensive coaching staff is expected to bring a more physical on-field mindset.

New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley seemed to single out one position on defense that is extremely important.  Safety.  News has surfaced recently that will make Hafley extremely happy.

According to Shanna McCarriston of CBS Sports:

The Buffalo Bills made a number of moves as they work feverishly to get under the salary cap in what’s been a very busy Wednesday for the franchise. The team announced the release of five players: safety Jordan Poyer, defensive back Siran Neal, wide receiver Deonte Harty, center Mitch Morse and running back Nyheim Hines.

The Bills will also release former Pro Bowl cornerback Tre’Davious White with a post-June 1 designation, according to CBS Sports lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones.

The Packers have a serious need at Safety this off-season, and it just so happens that the 2024 free agency market may be the perfect opportunity to address it.

Here’s the list of top free agent safeties, sorted by current PFF ranking:

    • Kamren Curl, Commanders
      Xavier McKinney, Giants
      Geno Stone, RavensJulian Blackmon, Colts
      Jordan Fuller, Rams
      Jordan Whitehead, Jets
      C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Lions
      DeShon Elliott, Dolphins
      Tashaun Gipson, 49ers
      Alohi Gilman, Chargers
    • Jordan Poyer, Rams
      Mike Edwards, Chiefs
      Jeremy Chinn, Panthers
      Micah Hyde, Bills
      Jayron Kearse, Cowboys
      Brandon Jones, Dolphins
      Taylor Rapp, Bills
      Kevin Byard, Eagles (released)
      Eddie Jackson, Bears (released)
      John Johnson III, Rams
      Jamal Adams, Seahawks (released)
      Quandre Diggs, Seahawks (released)

General Manager Brian Gutekunst has made it clear that the team is not only open to using draft picks in a trade scenario to bring in a veteran, but that the free agency market may be an option as well.

Jeff Hafley’s love for the Safety position coupled with the already existing need may cause the Packers to double dip at the position.  Whether that be draft and free agency or free agency and trade.

The 2020 off-season saw the Packers doubled dip at the pass rusher position (Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith).  It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Packers do something similar in 2024 at Safety.
