Green Bay Packers cornerback Eric Stokes recently had his No. 5 jersey retired by his alma mater, Eastside High School in Covington, Georgia, during halftime of a local basketball game.
Stokes is the second NFL player in the program’s history to be bestowed such honor alongside Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins.
“I didn’t think any of this was gonna happen. I was just a little kid playing ball. It’s just great being around everybody that raised me to be the man that I am today. It’s just amazing,” Stokes said, via Evan Newton of The Covington News.
“It’s definitely up there at the top of my career,” he continued. “Because at the end of the day, that’s something that’s never gonna go away. Retiring a number is very big to me.”
Eric Stokes’ stats with the Green Bay Packers this season
Eric Stokes is fresh from his healthiest campaign as a member of the Green Bay Packers. He notched 41 total tackles in 17 regular season games and was given a 61.3 overall grade by the PFF.
The 25-year-old cornerback will hit and test free agency this summer, so there’s a chance he might leave Green Bay. Stokes hasn’t fulfilled his potential as the former no. 29 overall pick so far due to injuries.
