The Green Bay Packers have a tough decision with David Bakhtiari this off-season. Week one proved he could still be one of the best left tackles in the NFL when healthy. Unfortunately, that was the only game Bakhtiari was able to play this season due to his lingering knee issues.
However, today LaFleur released a statement about what the future of Bakhtiari in a Packers uniform looks like.
Head Coach Matt LaFleur Makes Announcement Regarding David Bakhtiari’s Future With Team
According to Ryan Wood of USA Today:
Matt LaFleur keeping things open with David Bakhtiari: “I mean, he’s a hell of a player, right? He is a hell of a player, and he had a big-time injury.
So I’m sure we’ll evaluate that, get more information, talk to Dave, and those decisions will be made in the near future.”
In the last few seasons, the Packers and David Bakhtiari have had an interesting relationship. In December of 2020, Bakhtiari tore his ACL, which has had far-reaching consequences for his career. Bakhtiari will have played just one game in two of the last three seasons (2021 and 2023) because of that ACL tear. In 2022, Bakhtiari played 11 games, but his season was cut short again because of knee issues.
Does Bakhtiari Want To Return To Green Bay?
If the Packers feel confident in his ability to not only get healthy but play at a high level, they would almost certainly love to have him protecting Jordan Love’s blindside.
It has also been annotated that Bakhtiari seems to want to return to Green Bay. Robin Adams of Wisconsin Sports Heroics first reported it for our site:
The fact of the matter is that the Packers seem to have found their next franchise quarterback in Jordan Love. It also appears that the young wide receivers that he has around him are going to turn out to be fairly special players as well. The next job for the organization, then, is to make sure he is adequately protected.
When Bakhtiari was on the field in Week One, he proved that he is still one of the best left tackles in the NFL. In his absence, neither Rasheed Walker nor Yosh Nijman have been able to grab a permanent hold of the position.
As such, it appears that Green Bay may not move forward with either at the position. Nijman is going to be a free agent anyway, and Walker may need a little more seasoning. Who better to learn under than one of the best tackles in Packers history?
And that certainly appears to be Bakhtiari’s plan:
That’s the plan!
