The Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos have both had surprising starts to the 2023 season. The Packers have started 2-1 which included an 18-point comeback win vs. the New Orleans Saints in Week Three. Jordan Love has silence a lot of doubters (although many critics remain) with his play over the first three games of the season.
The Denver Broncos had high expectations in 2023 despite finishing 5-12 in 2022. At the end of the day still havre Russell Wilson, many fans believed the Super Bowl winning quarterback would return to his elite play. However, three games into the 2023 season the Broncos are 0-3 and look like they could be one of the worst teams in 2023. If that trend continues, the Broncos could be inclined to trade away players for future draft capital.
Denver Broncos Trade Wide Receiver Courtland Sutton To The Green Bay Packers Amid Russell Wilson Struggles
Sayer Bedinger of Fansided highlighted what this could mean for both sides:
The Green Bay Packers, just in general, have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL. They are a very talented team, but there might be some areas where they could use veteran leadership.
When wide receiver Courtland Sutton came into the NFL, he had tremendous mentorship from the late, great Demaryius Thomas as well as Emmanuel Sanders. Those guys taught Sutton how to be a pro, and now he can pass that on to other young players as he is set to turn 28 in just a couple of weeks.
By no means is Sutton beyond the point of making a significant impact on the field — he can certainly be an asset to the Packers’ offense, but I think the combination of what he brings to the table leadership-wise as well as his on-field production could make him a great fit for what’s going on in Green Bay.
You look at the first three weeks of the season for the Packers, and the most impressive performances by receivers have been slightly underwhelming. Now, Christian Watson returning to the lineup will certainly be a game-changer for that unit overall, but I wouldn’t sleep on the potential of the Packers adding a veteran at the receiver position.
A player like Courtland Sutton can come in and provide that veteran presence as well as a big body who excels as a blocker, red zone option, and can win downfield contested catch situations. If the price is right, I definitely don’t hate this option for Green Bay.
If the Packers were interested in trading for a wide receiver this season, Sutton should be near the top of their list. At 27 years old, he is still in his prime. Having a proven veteran wide receiver to line up next to Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs would give Jordan Love plenty of fire power through the air in 2023.
In November 2021, the Broncos extended Sutton for four years and $60.8 million. His contract runs through 2025, and his cap hit next year is $18.3 million. By trading after June 1, Denver would save $14.4 million in 2023 and incur dead-cap charges of $3.8 million in 2023 and $7.7 million in 2024.
The Packers will have extra draft capital in 2024 after the Aaron Rodgers trade as well as compensatory picks for all the free agents the Packers chose not to re-sign. If the Packers also continue to have injury issues at the wide receiver position, they could be intrigued to add to the position by the Oct. 31st trade deadline.
