The NFL draft is just over a month away. As it gets closer, fans start to look at just exactly how many picks their team has. The Green Bay Packers had a successful 2022 draft and they look to duplicate that success in 2023. Today, the NFL awarded the Packers 2 compensatory draft picks for the upcoming draft.

Green Bay Packers Receive 2 Compensatory Draft Picks
The Packers have picked up two more day 3 picks. The fifth-round pick is 170th overall and the seventh-round pick is 256th overall. While these may seem like nothing, the Packers have proven they can find value at these spots in the draft. Kingsley Enagbare was a fifth-round pick last year and Samori Toure was a seventh-round pick. Both of these players had some role in the regular season. All over the league, there are players that are solid starters that have been drafted on day 3.

How Are These Pick Awarded?
For those unfamiliar with how the system works, compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose key free agents in the offseason. The NFL determines the value of the pick by “a formula based on salary, playing time, and postseason honors.” Basically, if a team loses a marquee-free agent, they are compensated for the loss. The goal is to try and help teams reload after losing key players. These picks are also awarded to teams that employ minority employees to “promote equal employment opportunities and an inclusive workforce.”
These are another two picks that the Packers will have to work with. They can use them in a variety of ways but based on last year’s success, fans should be excited to see what GM Brian Gutekunst can do in the draft.
