The Green Bay Packers might be good right now, but the Kansas City Chiefs have built one of the best dynasties in sports history. Unlike a lot of other dynasties, it isn’t built just off of one athlete. Sure, Patrick Mahomes means a lot, and without him, the team would be perennially 11-5 wild card contenders like they were with Alex Smith.
But just like the Golden State Warriors, the Chiefs wouldn’t be much without Mahomes just like how the Warriors would be without Curry. Also like the Warriors, there have been other superstars that will be in the Hall of Fame regardless of what team they played on.
In the Chiefs case, that would most certainly be Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones. At this point, they’ll all make the HOF, and in all likelihood will be first ballot.
Many Chiefs fans are still in a celebratory mood. Those who are sobered already are worried about where Chris Jones will go. Will he go to a place with a bit of cap space and young talent – a place like Green Bay perhaps?
Why The Green Bay Packers Would Attempt To Sign Chris Jones
The cap situation for the Packers isn’t the best right now, but it’s expected to change many times over the next few months. Rashan Gary just got his contract restructured which has increased the current cap space to $10 million available.
Right now, that wouldn’t be enough to bag Jones. But with many veterans such as David Bahktiari being in talks for getting cut (which would save $21 million in Bahktiari’s case) and other veterans potentially getting their contract restructured, the sky is the limit for who Green Bay could potentially sign.
Jones would bring tremendous value to the team. Championship experience and one of the best pass rushers in a pass-rush-dominant era? Opportunities like these don’t always come around, which is why Green Bay should seriously consider their options.
Where Would Chris Jones Fit In Jeff Hafley’s Defense?
Jeff Hafley’s goal is to create an aggressive man-coverage defense. They don’t necessarily need a great 4-man rush, but every defense’s goal regardless of philosophy is to have 4 guys that can generate pressure on nearly every snap. With Jones in the mix, you’d have Chris (most likely at DT but he’s known to move around the line) and Rashan Gary on the edge across from Lukas Van Ness.
That’s a deadly combination, and if it works correctly it allows Hefley to use a lot of Cover 5 (2 deep safeties and man coverage underneath) which is extremely hard to pass on if the talent is there.
Why The Kansas City Chiefs Just Might Re-Sign Chris Jones
Unfortunately, the Chiefs will likely sign one of Jones or cornerback L’Darius Sneed. Do they go with a pillar of their dynasty or the next big DB in the game? It’s a tough decision, but with their cap space, they will have a choice.
Even if the Packers don’t get Jones, they will have other options for getting a pass-rusher in the middle of the line. Some fans want the team to address the secondary, and it might just be more fruitful in the long run.
