The Green Bay Packers have been struggling on defense this season, and one of the players who could maybe help them fix things is Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker. Baker has been linked to the Packers for quite some time now. The NFL trade deadline is on October 31, and we are inching closer to that date.
Baker is 27 years old and will be under contract for another year after 2023. The Green Bay Packers have a 2-3 record so far this season, and the Arizona Cardinals have a 1-5 record so far this season, and they are looking to be sellers at the NFL trade deadline.
Arizona has recently designated Budda Baker to return from injured reserve, and it was the same day that they designated quarterback Kyler Murray to return from injured reserve as well. Baker is returning from a hamstring injury. He can play this weekend against the Seattle Seahawks (3-2), but it remains to be seen.
He will be one of the top safeties on the trade market before the trade deadline. Peter Bukowski said on the “Locked on Packers” podcast:
“Budda Baker would be a player for me I would be more interested in. It’s a clear and obvious need, they don’t have any investment there at all, and would make this team better.”
The Green Bay Packers Should Try and Throw the Bag At Budda Baker, But There will be Other Suitors
With Jordan Love on a rookie deal right now, they should use some of that money in other areas of need. Bukowski added:
“He would be one of those guys you wouldn’t mind paying while you have Jordan Love on the cheap. I know they don’t have a lot of money and that’s one of the reasons this is all complicated right now, but they could get someone like Budda Baker, you redo the contract, super-low cap hit this year. You can extend it next year when Aaron Rodgers comes off the books, you potentially have David Bakhtiari off the books.”
This would be a good move for the Packers to trade and try for Baker, but would general manager Brian Gutekunst actually do it? That’s another story in itself. They usually don’t make trades and sign free agents. Their theme is to draft and develop players.
A couple of teams that could trade for him are the Philadelphia Eagles, the Detroit Lions, and the Buffalo Bills. Green Bay should make a move, but the odds are they won’t get Baker because they don’t want to make a trade.
