The Green Bay Packers are going to have to start thinking long term at the running back position. While many fans hope this isn’t Aaron Jones’ last year with the Packers, it is relatively possible. Jones’ age (29), salary cap hit next season (17M), and recent injuries make it possible that the Packers could go in a new direction. At the same time, A.J. Dillon has not developed into the true RB1 that many thought he could be at the start of his career.
That being said, the Packers have been linked to a massive running back that could come in and provide stability to the position for the foreseeable future.
The Green Bay Packers Have Been Heavily Linked To Massive Wisconsin Badgers Running Back Braelon Allen
The NFL Staff at Bleacher Reported highlighted how this move would be beneficial for Green Bay:
With A.J. Dillon’s contract about to expire, the Cheeseheads will be in the market for a bruiser at running back. They won’t have to look far, as Allen could certainly fill that role and currently has a third-round grade on B/R’s NFL draft big board.
“Allen is a throwback to a different time in football,” B/R offensive skill position scout Derrik Klassen said. “Allen is all of 6’2”, 245 pounds and he runs like it. He’s a hammer between the tackles, and it’s not easy to bring him down with just one tackler unless you chop him down at the ankles like a massive tree.
“Allen is nimbler than he looks, too. He isn’t going to shake anyone out of their shoes, but he’s rather graceful navigating behind the line of scrimmage. Allen still needs to iron out some of his work on passing downs, but he’s such a young player with rushing potential worth investing in.”
Would The Packers Invest Premium Draft Capital At The Running Back Posistion?
The Wisconsin back Braelon Allen has displayed all the traits of a game-changing workhorse. He rushed for over 3,500 yards and 35 touchdowns during his three years with the Badgers. Even as a freshman, Allen had over 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 6.8 yards per carry as he exploded onto the scene.
With a height of 6-foot-2 and a weight of 245 pounds, Allen is an absolute monster. As a rookie, he will be only 20 years old, which is something we don’t see every day.
At his size, Allen is clearly a force to be reckoned with. His sneaky speed makes him even more of a threat.
The last time the Packers used a premium draft pick on a running back was A.J. Dillon back in the 2020 NFL Draft. It would certainly make sense for them to use another one four years later.
