Green Bay Packers rookie kicker Anders Carlson will never forget about that crucial missed field goal he had in their 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Saturday. He also knows just who exactly was to blame for that blunder, and it’s no other than himself.
Anders Carlson Blames Himself For Agonizing Missed FG in Green Bay Packers Loss
Via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic:
“I knew the wind was right to left and my goal was to play a little right-middle and just the contact off my foot started a little too much left,” Carlson said. “By then, it played off the post and just gotta have better contact … Operation was great, blocking was great. It’s all me.”
The Green Bay Packers had a golden opportunity to bury the 49ers deeper in the fourth quarter of the matchup. Holding a precarious four-point lead with under seven minutes remaining on the game clock, Carlson went to the field with the belief he could get the job done for his team. He left with a damaged reputation as a kicker in the eyes of Packers fans who had to endure watching 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey get San Francisco the lead off of a rushing touchdown in the Niners’ first drive after that missed FG by Carlson.
Perhaps the lights in the NFL playoffs were simply too bright for a first-year player like Carlson, but the Green Bay Packers still needed him to be perfect. Unfortunately for Carlson, he failed to deliver on his biggest kick attempt of his young pro career. Who knows if he’ll ever get to atone for his flub?
Back in the regular season, Carlson went 27-for-33 on field-goal tries and just 34-for-39 on extra-point chances.
