The Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers will forever be synonymous. The future hall of fame quarterback spent 18 years in Green Bay, starting 15 of those years as the starting quarterback. No matter your personal opinion of Rodgers, he has proven over and over that he is one of the smartest quarterbacks to ever play the game.
Much of the time those smarts come out in the form of taking advantage of rules the NFL has laid out. However, one rule the NFL could impose in the near future could be a disadvantage to the 40-year-old quarterback.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Get Rough News From The NFL
According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:
In the Week Four Lions-Packers game, the third quarter expired a moment before the Packers snapped the ball. The play should have been immediately blown dead, but the officials didn’t notice, and the Packers gained 44 yards on the play. The Lions weren’t happy about it, but there was no way to fix the officials’ mistake.
If a new rule proposal by the Competition Committee passes, such mistakes can be fixed.
The proposed rule change states simply, “The game clock is reviewable to determine if the period expired before any snap.” In other words, if the clock reached :00 at the end of any quarter or overtime, but the ball was snapped anyway, replay could fix that mistake.
This would not affect delay of game penalties, as it applies only to the game clock, not the play clock.
It’s not an issue that comes up very often, but it could potentially be game-changing, and it seems likely that the league will approve the proposal. Like all rule changes, it will require at least 24 of the 32 NFL teams to vote in favor of it.
Rodgers Has Made A Living Off The Play Clock
According to Paul Noonan:
Half of the Packers’ snaps in 2020 (not including the fourth quarter) occurred in the final 5 second of the play clock. That is incredible, and the only other team that was even close is the Eagles. Just as strikingly, the Packers almost never snap the ball with 16+ seconds remaining. When they are attempting comebacks, this tendency is just as glaring.
It is no secret that Rodgers uses the play-clock to his advantage. It will be interesting to see if the NFL forces Aaron Rodgers out of his comfort zone going forward.
