Former Green Bay Packers running back Jamaal Williams is closing in on a record set by Barry Sanders. Currently, this season, Williams has 12 rushing touchdowns, which leads the NFL. Barry Sanders currently holds the Detroit Lions franchise record with 16 rushing touchdowns in a single season. Now, with seven games remaining in the regular season, Williams only needs five more trips to the endzone on the ground to break Sanders’ record.
Packers Former RB Thriving In Detroit
Jamaal Williams has been a key offensive weapon for the Detroit Lions in 2022. After an injury suffered by fellow Detroit RB D’Andre Swift, Williams has seen significant time in the starting role. In addition to his 12 rushing touchdowns, Williams has also accumulated 668 rushing yards, which is good enough for 13th in the league. Williams’ three touchdown performance against the New York Giants on Sunday helped lead the Lions to their first three game win streak since 2017.
However, before Williams found success in Detroit, he was a member of the Green Bay Packers. In 2017, he was drafted by the Packers in the fourth round. During that same draft, Green Bay selected RB Aaron Jones in the fifth round.
In Williams’ rookie season with the Packers in 2017, he led Green Bay in rushing yards with 556. From 2018-2020, Aaron Jones saw a majority of the carries, leading the Packers in rushing yards during those years. In 2021, Williams became a free-agent and signed a two-year deal with the Detroit Lions for $7.5 million.
