Earlier in the week the Milwaukee Brewers and 2021 Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes had an arbitration hearing over $740k. The Brewers offered $10.01 million while Burnes was looking for $10.75 million. The Brewers won the hearing and Burnes will be making $10.01 million for the year which is still good money. However, Brewers fans don’t understand why the owner is penny-pinching and not locking up one of the best- if not the best starting pitcher in the league. Burnes seemed very disgruntled about the situation in a recent interview and fans are taking his side by calling out the owner Mark Attanasio.
A Trend for the Milwaukee Brewers
This has appeared to be a running trend in Milwaukee. The Brewers seem to always have homegrown players, but Mark Attanasio doesn’t want to pay the players, and doesn’t see the value in them. This stems back to 2022 when the Brewers traded Josh Hader and were first in the division. The fans and even the locker room were confused by the move. M
any could say the Brewers are trying to prepare for the future, but when they’ve been in a playoff run since 2018, the front office should be “all in”. The lack of aggression when it comes to recruiting top free agents; while also saying year after year “we have the team to win” suggests a hint of frustration coming from the fanbase.
What Does This Mean for the Future?
What could this mean for players on the team now? Brandon Woodruff could be an ace on multiple Major League teams today. Woodruff signed a one-year 10.8 million dollar contract to avoid arbitration back in January. Could he rethink his time with the Brewers after seeing what happen to Burnes and realize this team doesn’t value their top players? Some could argue that the Brewers signed Ryan Braun and Christian Yelich to long-term deals, but when you see what’s going on around the league, teams that want to win lock up their players.
Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has always been known to penny-pinch. The Brewers watch the rest of the league make big splashes in trades and free agencies year after year. If the Brewers want to stay competitive, they need to start being aggressive and stop making excuses.
