The Green Bay Packers are struggling this season as they are third in the NFC North with a 2-5 record and quarterback Jordan Love has failed to find a way to consistently take over games. Apparently, it has been enough for Colin Cowherd to declare him a bust as he recapped Week 8 action on The Colin Cowherd Podcast.
“Green Bay is going to move off Jordan Love, they’re gonna draft another quarterback. Everyone in that building, they’re not gonna say it. Green Bay is full of nice people, it’s in the midwest, he’s a good kid, he worked hard, they don’t want to bury him. How many first halves are we gonna watch, scripted plays with an offensive coach, they can’t even move the chains. What I’m watching is a backup, not a franchise guy.”
Jordan Love has not been able to find consistency under center in his first year as a starting quarterback. He is currently 135-of-234 (57.7 completion percentage) for 1,492 yards with 11 touchdowns and tied for the NFL lead with eight interceptions. He is signed until the end of next season so this could be a decision for the offseason for general manager Brian Gutekunst to make.
If the Green Bay Packers move on from Jordan Love, who can be under center in 2024 and beyond?
If the Green Bay Packers decide to move on from Jordan Love, the free agent market in 2024 is not too great. Kirk Cousins highlights the free agent market but he suffered an Achilles tear in Week 8. The other free agents are Ryan Tannehill, Jacoby Brissett, Tyrod Taylor, Marcus Mariota, Sam Darnold, Jameis Winston and Baker Mayfield.
Green Bay might just decide to draft a quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft as well. After Week 8 of the 2023 regular season, they hold the sixth pick. In a draft where there are potentially 5-9 quarterbacks that will be selected in the first round, the team may decide to move or just put pressure on Love to improve.
Looking at some mock drafts, Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are the two quarterbacks projected to be selected ahead of the sixth-overall pick. However, the Packers are in need of more than a quarterback so they can take other non-quarterbacks as well.
The Packers have some issues but Jordan Love is not being a problem solver this season. There is still over half the season to see improvement and could be his future with the team on the line.
