The Chicago Cubs bullpen is in need of some reinforcements. Prior to their opening game against the Pittsburgh Pirates they announced a roster move that gives them a fresh arm. Re-joining the team is promising 28 year old right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson. Optioned down was Michael Rucker.
Keegan Thompson enjoyed good success both as a starting pitcher and reliever in 2021 (3.38 ERA) and 2022 (3.76 ERA). Unfortunately he struggled early on in 2023 (4.22 ERA) and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Initially he struggled in the minor leagues, but he has been pitching a lot better as of late and will get an opportunity at the big league level as soon as tonight for he is available to pitch in Thursday’s game.
After the Chicago Cubs announced that Keegan Thompson was returning fans welcomed him back with open arms.

I remember how rough things looked at times for Keegan Thompson earlier this year, but I also remember how FANTASTIC he looked last year when he was specifically used for 30-ish pitches in a multi-inning outing. That’s his role. Just let him do that.

People (myself included) had him ahead of Justin Steele as recently as last May or June. A healthy and locked in Keegan Thompson gives this team such a big difference maker
