The Chicago Cubs acquired Jeimer Candelario at this year’s trade deadline. Since joining the Cubs 16 games ago he has been an impact player who has defensive versatility. At seasons end the 30 year old will hit free agency for the first time in his career and one writer at The Athletic (subscription required) strongly suggested that the Cubs resign him.

Should the Chicago Cubs re-sign Jeimer Candelario at seasons end?
In a recent article from Patrick Mooney of The Athletic he strongly suggested that the Cubs should re-sign Jeimer Candelario. His reasoning is solid and he covers topics such as contract length/pay, fit on the team, and upcoming prospects.
“Hoyer’s preferred method of dealmaking is giving higher annual salaries for shorter contract lengths. Candelario will be 30 on Opening Day next year, and his versatility is an appealing quality for a team that wants to create depth, play matchups and buy time for prospects to develop without saddling future payrolls with onerous deals…On both sides, it sounds like a lot of the boxes have already been checked.”
Once free agency begins Jeimer Candelario will be a top third base free agent. Other players scheduled to hit the open market are Matt Chapman, Evan Longoria, and Giovanny Urshela. There are a few guys with pending club or mutual options including Josh Donaldson, Justin Turner, and Eduardo Escobar.
How the Cubs finish out the 2023 season could have an impact on if Jeimer Candelario elects to re-sign or go elsewhere. He also could significantly increase his value by delivering down the stretch and in the post-season.
