After losing to the New York Giants on the final play of the game with a score of 24-22, the Green Bay Packers have fallen to below .500 with a 6-7 record and move down to 3rd place in the NFC Norh Standings.
There’s only four weeks left in the regular season. The Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions are pulling ahead in the division standings, but the Packers chances at a playoff spot are not out of the question whatsoever.
The Green Bay Packers Would Hold a Wildcard Spot if the Playoffs Started This Week
If the regular season ended today, Green Bay would be in 7th place in the NFC and would hold a wildcard spot. The Packers are tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons who all currently hold a 6-7 record in the NFC standings.
The Buccaneers have the tiebreaker in the NFC South, which would earn them the 4th seed in the conference and the division title. The Eagles and Vikings hold the 5 and 6 seeds, leaving the teams with a 6-7 record to fight for the last two spots. The Rams beat the Seahawks and the Falcons beat the Saints. So, Los Angeles and Atlanta would go into a tiebreaker with Green Bay for the 7 seed.
The Packers beat the Rams head-to-head, but lost to the Falcons. Los Angeles and Atlanta have not faced off this season. So, the tiebreaker would come down to conference record. Both Green Bay and Los Angeles have a 4-4 conference record, which edges out Atlanta who is 4-5 in conference play. Since the Packers beat the Rams head-to-head, they would take the number 7 spot and make the playoffs as a wildcard.
Despite Currently Holding a Playoff Spot, the Packers Must Win to Stay in the Race
While Jordan Love and the Packers may currently hold the number 7 spot, six wins is not going to get them in the playoffs. Green Bay needs to win at least two of their next four games to stay in the hunt.
If the Packers go 4-0, they will clinch a playoff spot with a chance at winning the NFC North. If they go 3-1, they will have a high percentage of obtaining a playoff spot, but winning the division would be more difficult. Going 2-2 isn’t worst case scenario, but they would end the season with an 8-9 record and likely leave their fate in another team’s hands. Winning only one of their next four games will almost guarantee elimination from playoff contention.
The Packers will look to redeem their loss to the Giants and keep their spot in the playoffs this Sunday at 1:00 PM Eastern time, where they will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Lambeau Field.
