Caleb Williams is the number one quarterback in the transfer portal right now. In fact, you could argue he’s maybe even the best overall player available.
Coming into the 2021 season, Spencer Rattler was a top Heisman candidate and the next great QB out of Oklahoma. But after a disappointing start to the season, former OU coach Lincoln Riley made the shocking decision to replace Rattler for five-star freshman Caleb Williams. What was thought to be a one game decision for Coach Riley turned into Williams winning the job.
Who is Caleb Williams?
Williams is a 6’1 dual-threat quarterback; he was a five-star recruit and the number two ranked QB in his class. He attended Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C. before committing to play collegiately at Oklahoma. Williams also had offers from Alabama, Clemson, and Florida. This kid is the real deal.
When it was announced that Lincoln Riley would be leaving Oklahoma to coach at USC, Williams announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. The crystal ball predictions still have him projected to follow his former coach to sunny southern California. However, there is some serious buzz right now rumoring his interest in Wisconsin.
Ties to Wisconsin?
You may be asking yourself, “Why would Caleb Williams want to come to Wisconsin?” I, too, wondered what the Badgers’ appeal would be to a five-star dual-threat NFL-hopeful QB. Just ask Russell Wilson how his transfer to Madison went.
But hey, why not play behind one of the best offensive lines in the country, alongside a superstar running back and with the number one ranked defense? Aside from that, there are a few things that actually link Williams to Wisconsin.
The first one is his connection with Badger cornerback Dean Engram. These two attended the same high school in Washington, D.C. There have also been rumblings that Caleb Williams looks at Russell Wilson as a sort of mentor, someone he models his game after. Maybe he’s looking to take the same chance that Wilson took back in 2011.
Williams to Wisconsin Rumors
This afternoon’s rumor has shocked the college football world. Williams would be the highest rated transfer in program history for the Badgers, so it’s a pretty big deal. The suspicion comes due to a previous rumor that the Badgers are looking to bring in Bobby Engram as their offensive coordinator. Engram – who coached with Paul Chryst in Pittsburgh – would be a great hire, no doubt. But if that somehow sways Williams to the Badgers, it will be the best signing ever.
A few experts have now weighed in on the situation, with a few of them even changing their predictions.
Again, this is all speculation. It still remains between LSU, Wisconsin, and USC. I’m just excited to see that UW is legitimately in the sweepstakes for landing the best quarterback in the country. Adding Williams would immediately make the Badgers the favorites in the West, and maybe even the whole Big 10.
Could this be the year that Wisconsin finally gets over the hump? Having Caleb Williams under center would certainly help.
