The 2023 MLB draft isn’t until next summer, but there are some pre-draft events that need to take place.  New this year there will be a draft lottery.  This will take place during the Winter Meetings on December 6.  MLB also announced competitive balance picks for the 2023 MLB Draft.

What are the Brewers odds in the 2023 MLB draft lottery?

For the first time ever, the 18 non-playoff teams will all have a shot at a top six pick or better by participating in a lottery.  The Brewers had the best record among non-playoff teams and therefore they have the lowest odds in the draft lottery.  If the Brewers do not land a top six pick in the draft lottery, they will draft 18th overall next July in the draft.

Below is each team eligible for the draft lottery, their 2022 record, and odds for the first overall pick.

    1. Nationals (55-107), 16.5
    2. A’s (60-102), 16.5
    3. Pirates (62-100), 16.5
    4. Reds (62-100), 13.2
    5. Royals (65-97), 10.0
    6. Tigers (66-96), 7.5
    7. Rangers (68-94), 5.5
    8. Rockies (68-94), 3.9
    9. Marlins (69-93), 2.7
    10. Angels (73-89), 1.8
    11. D-backs (74-88), 1.4
    12. Cubs (74-88), 1.1
    13. Twins (78-84), 0.9
    14. Red Sox (78-84), 0.8
    15. White Sox (81-81), 0.6
    16. Giants (81-81), 0.5
    17. Orioles (83-79), 0.4
    18. Brewers (86-76), 0.2

Where will the Brewers select in the competitive balance round?

In 2023, the Brewers will draft in Round A of the competitive balance round.  This takes place in between rounds one and two.  In Round A, they will be the third team to select.  This will end up being a pick somewhere in the 30’s.  Free agents with qualifying offers attached to them will impact the exact pick number.  In 2021, Tyler Black was selected 33rd overall in this round.

MLB has officially announced the Competitive Balance picks for the 2023 MLB Draft. They are as follows:

    Round A
    1. Mariners
    2. Rays
    3. Brewers
    4. Twins
    5. Marlins
    6. Tigers
    7. Reds
    8. A’s

    Round B
    1. Guardians
    2. Orioles
    3. D-backs
    4. Rockies
    5. Royals
    6. Pirates
