MLB Winter Meetings are right around the corner. This year the event starts on Sunday, December 4 and ends Wednesday, December 7. Winter Meetings are typically a time when big trades and transactions are announced. The Brewers have made a few big moves of their own already this offseason, but they still have work to do. Here are two tasks that the Brewers should accomplish during the Winter Meetings,
Brewers task to complete during Winter Meetings #1: Find trade partners for Kolten Wong and Keston Hiura.
Since having his option picked up by the Brewers, Kolten Wong has been involved in numerous trade rumors around the league. With Brice Turang ready to contribute at the major league level, it seems unlikely that the Brewers will hold onto his $10MM salary. Turang is a pre-arbitration player who will make significantly less money. The Winter Meetings seems like a perfect time to find a suitor for Wong.
Additionally, the Brewer are at a crossroad with Keston Hiura. The once promising hitting prospect has sputtered since his breakout 2019 season. He is now out of minor league options and does not have an obvious fit on the Brewers team. Unloading him during Winter Meetings seems like a likely scenario.
Brewers task to complete during Winter Meetings #2: Add an impact bat.
As mentioned above, if Wong is traded then the Brewers will be down another impact bat and would be replacing it with an unproven player in Turang and potentially Luis Urias as well. This could open the door to add a third baseman. Another area of need is a starting catcher.
Whether adding an impact bat occurs via trade or signing, the Winter Meetings may be the time to do it. Justin Turner, Brandon Drury, and Brian Anderson are three free agent options available at third base. The Toronto Blue Jays have a surplus of catchers and the Oakland A’s Sean Murphy has been in a lot of rumors.
It will be interesting to see what all happens at this year’s Winter Meetings. More than likely only a few major moves will be made. Even if none of them involve the Brewers, the front office staff will definitely be gathering information during this time that could lead to a transaction later in the winter.
