The Milwaukee Brewers are off to a hot start in 2023. They are at the top of the NL Central. Their new players, along with some of their top prospects up and contributing right away, are creating a winning formula so far. But did you also know their roster is technically the heaviest team in all of baseball?
Let’s first say that this isn’t a bad thing. This article isn’t shaming anyone on the team or the Milwaukee Brewers roster. You can have a heavier weight if you are full of muscle mass, too. It’s also about genetics. The Milwaukee Brewers also have a type at first base and have a long history of that. Prince Fielder, Chris Carter, Adam Lind. Should I continue?
I found this tweet, and had to share:
Total weight (lbs) of each mlb team's 26 man roster
interesting fact:
1 full major league baseball team weighs roughly the same as 1 adult male rhino (5,300 lbs) per wikipedia pic.twitter.com/4PeuYnd9Ti— Jay Cuda (@JayCuda) April 6, 2023
So based on this year’s current 26 man roster, the Brewers currently weigh 5,640 pounds. This shouldn’t be too alarming, though. The league’s lowest is 5,242. That’s less than 400 pounds of difference. If anything, it makes this team’s more unique given how they have performed so far. It also doesn’t help a Wisconsin and Midwest stereotype, though.
Why Are The Brewers The Heaviest Team?
It’s not that hard to see why Milwaukee has the biggest boys in baseball. Our current first baseman pair is perfect. These stats will be according to MLB.com. Rowdy Tellez is currently listed at 6’4 and 270 pounds. Now, I know sometimes they pump up a player’s height or weight like the WWE. But they might not be too far off. And instead of Keston Hiura alongside Rowdy, they have Luke Voit. Voit is 258 pounds and 6’2.
By comparison, Hiura is listed at just over 200 pounds. So with the addition of Voit and his power bat, it also adds another 50 pounds to the team’s overall weight. When your two players who will split time at first base weight over 520 pounds, that is a lot of power over at the corner spot.
Where does the extra mass and strength come from besides them? It could be the All-Star players they traded for during the offseason. Jesse Winker stands at 6’2 and 230. William Contreras is apparently 5’11 and 216 pounds. But that cancels out former catcher Omar Narvaez from last year.
You would think rookie Joey Wiemer’s 220 pounds and 6’4 frame definitely added to it as well. But, he technically weighs less than Hunter Renfroe and around the same range as Tyrone Taylor according to MLB. Brice Turang weighs less than Kolten Wong.
Is the math or science probably exact on this tweet? Absolutely not. But just imagine if this team still had Daniel Vogelbach or brought up Jon Singleton at some point. Or if they still had Narvaez, Pina or Maldonado. They say that if you are going to be the best at something, go for the record.
Heaviest Team Doesn’t Matter And Should Be Celebrated
We need to remember that this isn’t a slam. It is a fun stat for this Milwaukee Brewers team. The current roster construction is working better than almost everyone expected. The young players are making an impact immediately. This team may be the heaviest, but they might also be one of the fastest.
Christian Yelich is still a demon on the base paths. Brice Turang, Joey Wiemer and Garrett Mitchell have already shown their speed. Youth and talent are helping this team along with the players they brought in during the offseason. Speed is helping this team when it was needed last year. They might have the most pounds, but I would argue they are also in top five speed.
The pitching is doing great even with a list of injuries already. Aaron Ashby might not return this season. Adrian Houser will take time to come back, along with Jason Alexander. Corbin Burnes is off to a rocky start, but will be just fine. The bullpen, perhaps the team’s biggest question mark going into the 2023 season, has been solid.
It’s still very early in the season, but the Brewers have brought fun back to their team and Brewers fans. They have youth already impacting the team. They are wearing a cheesehead in the dugout when they hit a home run. And they now have the biggest team in baseball. Things are looking up and are fun, no matter what happens this season. The year will have ups and downs, but remember to keep the ups in your mind when the downs show their face.
