The Baltimore Orioles acquired starting pitcher Corbin Burnes in a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers for pitcher DL Hall, infielder Joey Ortiz, and the 34th overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan. With this trade, it is clear Baltimore is serious about winning the World Series in 2024.
They won the American League East in 2024 with a 101-61 record before flaming out in the ALDS in a sweep against the eventual World Series Champions, the Texas Rangers. The Brewers decided to depart from a key piece from their starting rotation and they won the National League Central a season ago with a 92-70 record.
They lost both games in the National League Wild Card Round against the eventual National League Champions, the Arizona Diamondbacks. It will be interesting to see how Milwaukee replaces Burnes in the rotation in 2024.
Burnes is 29 years old and entering his contract’s final year. The Orioles needed a number one starting pitcher badly, for a team with an elite offense led by Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Austin Hays.
A season ago with the Milwaukee Brewers, In 32 games last season with Milwaukee, his record was 10-8 with a 3.39 ErA, In 193.2 innings pitched, he has given up 141 hits and 77 runs, along with 66 walks and 200 strikeouts. His WHIP last season was 1.06.
Baltimore Orioles Send a Statement to the Rest of the American League East After the Corbin Burnes Trade
The Orioles are not playing around after the Burnes trade. They want to prove they are here for the long haul and they sent a message to the rest of the American League East and all of baseball. Baltimore did not have to deplete the farm system for this trade and Milwaukee could have done much better in this trade.
Mike Elias fleeced Matt Arnold in this trade. Does this mean that the Brewers are starting a rebuild after this trade? It doesn’t necessarily mean that because the National League Central is not a strong division by any means.
It is clear that the Orioles are eyeing a World Series Title and it is something they have not accomplished since 1983. The Brewers, on the other hand, will now have more questions than answers after the Corbin Burnes trade.
