You don’t need me to tell you the Brewers starting pitchers were great this year, but I’m going to say it anyway. The Brewers starting pitchers were absolutely, undeniably great this year.  It’s no surprise that they broke some franchise records, but exactly how many and by how much is pretty bewildering. Some of the counting stats like the fewest walks issued or hits allowed will always belong to seasons shortened by strikes or pandemics, but this rotation even put up an honest fight against some of those years.  For example, the Brewers 2021 starting pitchers allowed 661 hits, which…

The inaugural regular season for the newly named American Family Field has come to a close, and boy was it a memorable one. So now that they’ve hosted all 81 games they had on the docket, it’s time to go through the numbers.  Miller Park vs AmFam Before the season started I wrote about the final numbers put up in the stadium when it was known as Miller Park. Even though the changes that were made were only off the field, there is a difference in the splits that I find interesting.  The basis of my preseason article was how…

The Brewers are hitting the road for their final six games of the year with nothing to gain or lose, so before they potentially blow up their away game stats, I’d like to look at the numbers that led them to an already franchise record number of wins on the road. To keep things simple, I’m going to discount 2020 from most of these stats and records. Franchise Records Like everything else with the Brewers this year, it starts with pitching. The Brewers have a league-best 3.04 era on the road this year. That’s nearly a half a run better…

There is no denying that the Brewers’ acquisition of shortstop Willy Adames in May is one of the best moves of the year in the baseball world. But going beyond this year, it could end up being one of the most successful trades in franchise history.  Brewers History At age 25, and with a guaranteed three more seasons of team control, Willy Adames could wind up being the best shortstop the team has had since Robin Yount moved to the outfield in 1985. Going into Sunday’s game against the Twins, Adames has put up an OPS of .920 since his…

By this point, everyone is aware of the success the Brewers pitching staff is having. I’m not here to convince you that they’re good, I’m here to tell you that they’re historic.  While none of them are threatening Bob Gibson’s live-ball AL/NL ERA record (1.12) or Nolan Ryan’s strikeout record (383), they are on track to set or threaten a handful of other records.  Basic Records First up, the record for lowest batting average allowed by a starting pitcher (min. 100 IP) is .167 set by Pedro Martinez in 2000. As of right now, Freddy Peralta is blowing by that,…

Brewers 2020 Report Card: Brandon Woodruff

With the Brewers coasting at the top of the National League Central, it’s interesting to look at the situational stats that have led them to this point. One of the most notable stats is their record versus right handed starters.  Record vs. Right Handed Starters The Brewers lead the majors in wins against right handed starters with 52, five more than any other team. Part of that is due to the fact that they’ve the third most right handed starters, behind NL Central rivals the Reds and Cardinals. However, when broken down into win percentage they still have the fourth…

The Brewers are 52-32 in games where they go up against a right handed starter. However, it appears they have something they like even more than seeing a righty starter on the mound, and it’s a lefty reliever.  RHP vs LHP While their .619 win percentage against righties compared to their .500 win percentage against lefties would imply they prefer to hit against righties, that doesn’t quite play out in their stat lines. The Brewers are slashing .225/.313/.385 against righties and .235/.328/.398 against lefties. That’s a 28 point bump in OPS against lefties. But is that because they prefer to…

Everybody’s working for the weekend, but if you’re like the Milwaukee Brewers, that’s when you do your best work.  Beating the Beatables After finishing off a sweep of the Rockies on Sunday, the Brewers will finish June with a record of 11-1 in games played Friday through Sunday. That gives them three weekend sweeps for the month, the other two being against the Pirates and Diamondbacks.  In fact, they’ve won 14 of their last 15 weekend games, with the lone loss coming in extra innings in Colorado on Friday, June 18th. They’re last loss in a nine inning weekend game…

The Brewers are easily one of the streakiest teams in MLB this year. They are the proud owners of three separate five-game winning streaks and the reluctant owner of two separate five-game losing streaks. So what can they do to find a little more consistency? Bats on the Bench My idea? Bring a third catcher on-board. The thinking here is it would free up Manny Pina to be more available to pinch hit. While he has been struggling at the plate so far this year, he has managed to post an OPS of .905 as a pinch hitter. While the…

Major League Baseball announced the finalists for the 2021 All-Star Game and while there are plenty of players with good cause to feel snubbed, perhaps no one has a better case than Brewers catcher Omar Narvaez.  The three finalists for catchers in the National League are Buster Posey of the Giants, Yadier Molina of the Cardinals, and Willson Contreras of the Cubs. Those three have combined to start nine of the last 11 All-Star Games. This year, however, Molina and Contreras appear to be sneaking in based off of clout.  Comparing the offensive numbers of those three to Omar Narvaez,…
