Aaron Rodgers Remains with Packers after Darkness Retreat; What’s Next?

Aaron Rodgers spent four days in a dark isolated room in an effort to gain some perspective on his life and future in football. While he has been criticized by many in the media and by some fans, this kind of darkness retreat is not as “out there” as one might think. The facility that Rodgers stayed in, Sky Cave Retreats, is booked solid through the summer. Rodgers has, no doubt, garnered some insight about what he plans to do in 2023 as a result of his experience. However, no one outside of himself (or his inner circle) is aware of what that exact plan is, which begs the question: what’s next?

Aaron Rodgers Is Still Under Contract with the Green Bay Packers

As trade rumors have swirled, Rodgers made one thing clear during his appearances on The Pat McAfee Show: “I am still under contract with the Green Bay Packers.” Rodgers and the Packers agreed to a massive three-year $150 million prior to the 2022 season. It makes sense, therefore, to assume that Rodgers will be under center for Green Bay in 2023 until one of two things happen:

    • He announces his intention to retire this offseason
    • The Green Bay Packers announce they will start Jordan Love regardless of what Rodgers decides and will seek a trade if he returns

Prior to his darkness retreat, Rodgers told McAfee that after his experience he would be taking a vacation and doing some traveling. This trip, he said, would take him up to March 1 when he would return home. Around that time, he expects to be ready to make a decision. This would give the Packers time to prepare for the 2023 season with or without him.

Of course, anything can happen. However, we have been told these two things multiple times:

    • The Green Bay Packers want Aaron Rodgers back (any “report” that says they do not want Rodgers back has NOT come from the organization)
    • Aaron Rodgers wants to end his career with the Green Bay Packers

Based on these facts, it seems like either Rodgers will play for the Packers in 2023 or he will retire. Things can change; change is an inevitable part of life, as Rodgers might say. However, the answer to the question of what Rodgers will decide is not as complicated as people make it out to be.
