Aaron Rodgers signed a three-year $150 million contract to remain with the Green Bay Packers before the 2022 season began. While that extension created a great deal of questions regarding the future of the quarterback position in Green Bay, it made sense (at the time) to give a back-to-back MVP that deal. Unfortunately for the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, 2022 proved to be a troublesome year.
The Packers Expect Aaron Rodgers to Return in 2023
NFL insider Ian Rapoport discussed Aaron Rodgers, the Packers, and the looming question regarding whether or not he would return to the team in 2023. On his show, Rapoport said: “My understanding is he committed to the Packers for two or three years. In fact, general manager Brian Gutekunst referenced this during his press conference this week. That is what the organization expected.”
Of course, just because the Packers expect Rodgers back does not guarantee that he will be back. Rodgers, by his own admission, is going to take some time this offseason to decided what his future plans will be. 2022 was not an easy season for Rodgers. Nor was it an easy season for anyone on the team. For his part, Rodgers dealt with a broken thumb on his throwing hand for at least half of the season. Additionally, the front office attempted to replace Davante Adams with three rookies and Sammy Watkins.
What About Jordan Love?
Now, there has been a great deal of debate on social media as to whether or not the Packers should move on from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love. The purpose of this is not to have that debate, but let it be clear that, in the interview referenced by Rapoport, Gutekunst said that the Packers want Aaron Rodgers back. They also believe Jordan Love is ready to start in the NFL. For fans, it is important to come to terms with the fact that both of these things can be true.
Jordan Love could very well request a trade. The Packers could also refuse to trade him, pick up his fifth year option, and then apply the franchise tag to Love twice before he would hit free agency. Is that something the Packers would do if Aaron Rodgers returned and Love wanted out? It’s possible.
There are numerous things possible when it comes to Aaron Rodgers and the quarterback position in Green Bay. The long and short of it is that we just won’t know how to accurately predict anything regarding the team until Rodgers makes a decision. That could be very soon, or it may be in a few weeks.
Time will tell.
