On Sunday afternoon at Stadium View Bar, there were several former legendary Packers players who gathered at a pregame tailgate. Among the players who were in attendance included former wide receiver Andre Rison, former right guard from the 1960’s dynasty Jerry Kramer and running back Ahman Green who is the franchise’s all time leading rusher. Having had the chance to talk with these legendary figures, they had a lot of great memories and thoughts to share.
General Impressions
I asked the legendary Packers players why they believe so many of them enjoy coming back to Green Bay after their playing days were over. The general consensus among the players was: “It’s fun to interact with fans and relieve many memories with all the legendary players. More than anything, it’s an honor and a privilege to be part of such an historic franchise.”
Ahman Green
The former Packers running back from 2000-06, ’09 had a lot to say. His opinions were wide ranging from his current impressions of the Packers backfield to what his favorite games were to be part of.
First and foremost, he said this about his former quarterback Brett Favre: “He was a funny dude, a great leader in the locker room. But most of all, he showed up when it counted.”
His impressions of the current running back room in Green Bay? His comments were nothing but positive. First, he talked about Aaron Jones. Then, he talked about AJ Dillon.
“I like both guys. They know what to their strengths are. Jones has great speed and can catch passes out of the backfield. Dillon is a guy that is a power runner but also has elusive movement.”
Andre Rison AKA Bad Moon
Additionally, wide receiver Andre Rison was in attendance. Rison only played for the Packers for a year, but his impact on the team was immediate. He scored the game’s first touchdown on a 53 yard bomb from Brett Favre.
“The touchdown I scored was for people other than myself, particularly all my family members. It was an amazing feeling.”
Jerry Kramer
Packer fans are familiar with the 2018 NFL Hall of Fame Inductee, former right guard Jerry Kramer. He was part of the legendary dynasty in the 1960’s that won five championships. I asked him what his favorite game was out of all the great games that he was a part of.
“My favorite game that I ever played in was the 1962 NFL Championship game against the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium. I kicked a field goal and an extra point in the game”.
Kramer was the first position player in NFL history to kick an extra point and field goal in a championship game having played guard as his original position.
Closing Thoughts
In closing, it was an honor and a privilege to meet and interview three of the biggest names in Packers franchise history and it was a day that I will never forget.
