The #5 Marquette Golden Eagles are hosting the upset-minded Providence Friars at home on Wednesday night. Tipoff for this basketball game will tip off at 6 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on FS1. The last time Marquette and Providence met was back on December 19, when the Friars took down the Golden Eagles 72-57.
Marquette hopes to be more prepared at home this time around against Providence than they were the last time on time. The Golden Eagles this basketball game with a 21-6 record and a 12-4 Big East Conference record. Marquette last played on Sunday against the Xavier Musketeers and won by a final score of 88-64.
Kam Jones was named the Big East Conference Player of the Week. This was the second time this season anyone on Shaka Smart’s team was named for that award. Jones scored 34 points in that contest and he has scored that amount in the last two games.
He also grabbed two rebounds and recorded one assist in that game as well. Tyler Kolek recorded another double-double for Marquette with 11 points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists. Oso Ighodaro scored 12 points and David Joplin also added 10 points for the Golden Eagles. They hope they all will be better against Providence in the second match-up.
The Providence Friars Upsetting the #5 Marquette Golden Eagles Would Help Solidify There Chances For the NCAA Tournament
As of right now according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, he has Providence as one of the last four teams into the March Madness field of 68. The Friars currently have an 18-9 record and a 9-7 record in Big East Conference play so far this season.
A win over Marquette on the road would help improve their chances drastically for an NCAA Tournament berth in 2024. Kim English is in his first season as the head coach of the Providence Friars. They haven’t played since last Wednesday against the Xavier Musketeers and they won that game on the road by a final score of 79-75.
Four players scored in double figures scored for Providence against Xavier. Devin Carter recorded a double-double with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. Jayden Pierre scored 17 points, Corey Floyd Jr. scored 11 points, and Rich Barron also added 10 points for the Friars.
This is a game that Providence is going to throw everything at Marquette and the Golden Eagles are going to have to be prepared for it. Marquette is still alive for a potential number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Friars will give the Golden Eagles some trouble, but Kam Jones and Tyler Kolek will be there to rescue the Marquette Golden Eagles over the Providence Friars.
