With the 2023 MLB Spring Training starting, baseball fans get excited about tailgating and warm weather. The Milwaukee Brewers have some familiar faces and new faces, whether the player has just been picked up in free agency/trades or is a young prospect on the verge of making his big-league debut.
Here are five players to watch for in the 2023 season.
1) C William Contreras

All-Star William Contreras (brother of rival Wilson Contreras) was acquired from the Atlanta Braves over the offseason. He brings a well-needed bat in Milwaukee. Batting .278 with 20 home runs and a .860 OPS. Milwaukee needs that big bat at the catcher position. He will love hitting in the hitter-friendly stadium in American Family field. Look for a rise in power numbers for Contreras.
2) OF Jesse Winker

Jesse Winker came over from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Kolten Wong and Abraham Toro. Winker is a former all-star with the Cincinnati Reds in 2021, batting .305 with 24 home runs and a .949 OPS. However, he had a down year in 2022 while playing with the Mariners, with a stat line of .219 average, 14 home runs, and a .688 OPS. Winker also had lingering injuries all of 2022, with his season-ending due to two different surgeries on his neck and knee. However, American Family field and a fresh start should see Jesse Winker has a bounce-back season.
3) Jackson Chourio
18-year-old and number one prospect in the Brewers system Jackson Chourio is a true 5-tool player. In 2022, Chourio batted with a .288 average, 20 home runs, and a .880 OPS while moving up three times in the Brewers farm system. He spent most of his time with the Carolina Mudcats and showed a ton of power. It does not look like he will be in the big leagues in 2023, but he continues to skyrocket to the top of Brewer’s systems. Keep an eye on Jackson Chourio to have a fascinating 2023 season.
4) OF Sal Frelick
The number two prospect for the Brewers, outfielder Sal Frelick shows a lot of speed and an excellent contact bat with hitting stats of a .311 average, 11 home runs,883 OPS, and an eye-opening 24 stolen bases. Frelick is a line-drive hitter who slaps the ball in play and lets his speed do the damage. We could see Frelick in the big leagues in 2023, but not projected to be on the opening-day roster.
5) SS/OF Brice Turang
The number four prospect shortstop/outfielder Brice Turang had a great year in 2022 in Triple-A Nashville. Hitting splits of .286 average, 13 home runs, .772 OPS, and a very impressive 34 stolen bases. Last season the Milwaukee Brewers were projected to call up Turang, but instead, the Brewers called up OF Garrett Mitchell, which gave Turang time to give his full attention to Triple-A baseball. He is always known for his athleticism and defense, but Turang’s power numbers increased last year. With Willy Adames future in Milwaukee being questioned, look for Turang to have some big league reps over the 2023 season to prepare for the 2024 season.
