San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has been in the news quite a bit during the 2023 NFL offseason. He is trying to claim the starting quarterback job for the 2023 season after injuring his ankle in Week 2 of the 2022 season and missing the rest of the season because of it.
Trey Lance has received a ton of criticism from his teammates this offseason about his maturity and his leadership. Veterans like George Kittle want a Super Bowl title as soon as possible. The San Francisco 49ers are in win-now mode.

The San Francisco 49ers Have Not Gelled This Offseason
They have not bonded with him much off the field this offseason and have bonded off the field more with quarterback Sam Darnold. They were hanging out with him at the Golden State Warriors game and teammates view him as the potential starting quarterback this season if Brock Purdy is not ready to go in Week 1 for the San Francisco 49ers.
According to Jose Luis Sanchez III of Sports Illustrated, Lance is beloved in the 49ers locker room. As a person, not as a player. When he was absent from a NBA Playoff game that his teammates attended, many assumed that he was not invited because they didn’t like him. That was not the case:
“Trey is beloved in our locker room,” Juszczyk said. “Everybody loves Trey. The dude really does work his ass off. He’s super personable. He is a very well-liked guy. So for whatever reason that he wasn’t at the basketball game, it’s not because we don’t like him.”
It appears as if the San Francisco 49ers have whiffed big time on the Trey Lance selection with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of North Dakota State. It is also questionable if they haven’t given him a chance since Lance is only 23 years old.
As a person, the San Francisco 49ers teammates don’t mind him. As a football player, it is a completely different story. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan knows who will be the Week 1 starting quarterback. The only way Trey Lance can win the starting job is if he is absolutely flawless during training camp and preseason play. If he is just average, Lance will probably not see the field at all in 2023.
If everyone is healthy, Brock Purdy will be the starter and Sam Darnold will be the backup. Trey Lance will be the third quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. He has a lot of work to do to win over the organization and he has to do it in a hurry.
