Brandon Woodruff led the 2022 Milwaukee Brewers in victories with 13. It was the 36th consecutive year that the Brewers have not had a 20-game winner on their pitching staff. It is currently one of the longest droughts in Major League Baseball.
Milwaukee Brewers 20-game winners
The Brewers have had three 20-game winners in their franchise history: Jim Colborn (21 wins in 1973), Mike Caldwell (22 wins in 1978) and Teddy Higuera (20 wins in 1986). The franchise has had four pitchers reach the 18-win mark with the last being Chris Capuano in 2005. The other 18-game winners were Lary Sorensen in 1978, Pete Vukovich in 1982 and Teddy Higuera in 1987.
The closest any Brew Crew pitcher has gotten to 20 wins in recent years was 17 by Zach Davies in 2017.
While it has been more than three decades for a 20-game winner for Milwaukee, the drought has been league-wide for a long time. In the American League, there has been only 12 20-game winners since 2010, and none in the last three seasons. In the National League, there have been 13 20-game winners since 2010. There has been a 20-game winner in the N.L. in each of the last two seasons, but before that there was not a 20-game winner in the N.L. from 2017-2020.
Only one 20-game winner in baseball in 2022
Last season saw only one 20-game winner: Kyle Wright of the Atlanta Braves won 21 games. The most games he had won in a previous MLB season was two in 2020.
As mentioned above, the Brewers franchise has not had a 20-game winner since 1986. That means that the National League Milwaukee Brewers have never had a 20-game winner since 1998, the year they moved from the A.L. to the N.L.
