The Green Bay Packers added a member of last season’s NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers squad. On Thursday afternoon, the Packers announced they cut a defensive lineman to make room for the claim.

The Packers and 49ers have swapped defensive players recently. The 49ers signed former Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell for a one-year deal this offseason while they wait for Dre Greenlaw to recover from an Achilles injury he suffered during the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Per a statement by the Packers, the team released defensive lineman:
The Green Bay Packers have released DL Rodney Mathews. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Thursday.

According to Field Yates with ESPN, the Packers claimed defensive end Spencer Waege off waivers.
The Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.

Per the 49ers, Waege spent the 2023 season on their practice squad:
“Waege (6-5, 295) originally signed with the team as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2023, and was waived by the team on August 27, 2023. He re-signed to the team’s practice squad on November 15, 2023, where he spent the remainder of the season.”
Waege recorded 104 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and four punt blocks in his college career at North Dakota State, per NDSU’s website.
