The Green Bay Packers selected Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt in the seventh round (245th overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft. It was a surprise that Pratt slipped all the way to the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft and it appeared as if he was going to be taken much earlier in the draft than he did.
The Packers starting quarterback next season will be Jordan Love, but the big question heading into training camp this season will be who is the backup quarterback? Will it be Michael Pratt or will it be Sean Clifford?
Clifford was on the roster a season ago as a rookie out of Penn State. The question is, will Sean Clifford have any more upside to his game rather than Michael Pratt? That is a question that head coach Matt LaFleur is going to have to figure out when training camp and preseason games roll around.
It is important because what happens if Love has to miss a game because of injury? Having a reliable backup quarterback is really important in the NFL. The good news is that Clifford did not have to start in place of Jordan Love last season, although some fans wanted him to start when Love was struggling early on before he got it going for them and never looked back.
As a senior last season at Tulane in 11 games played, he completed 65.4% of his passes for 2,406 yards, 22 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He also rushed for 286 yards on 98 carries and five touchdowns, along with averaging 2.8 yards per carry.
Lombardiavenue.com Freddie Boston Thinks Michael Pratt Will Beat Out Sean Clifford For the Backup Quarterback Job in 2024 For the Green Bay Packers
It is quite possible that the Packers only keep two quarterbacks on the roster once again this season. Jordan Love will be on the roster and it will come down to either Michaell Pratt or Sean Clifford. They will both get a ton of reps during the offseason and training camp.
Lombardiavenue.com writer Freddie Boston thinks that Pratt is going to be the other quarterback on the roster this season and Clifford won’t be. The reasoning he gave was as follows:
“We have a quarterback competition. Gutekunst said he wanted to add another passer in the draft, and the Packers landed a steal with Michael Pratt falling to Round 7. Pratt will compete with Sean Clifford for the backup job. Clifford has the advantage of spending a year in Green Bay, but Pratt has exciting upside and should make the roster.”
If Pratt does not win the job over Clifford, then Michael Pratt may not have the potential we thought he had. The goal of this competition is to have a reliable backup quarterback for Jordan Love and not many NFL teams understand the importance of it because injuries do happen at the NFL level.
