While much of the attention in Madison has been on the football and basketball team, a Wisconsin volleyball commit, Saige Damrow was named the states Gatorade Player of the Year. A senior at Howards Grove High School, Damrow will continue her academic and athletic career at UW Madison. Damrow will attend classes this spring at the university, allowing her to be around during spring workouts.
Damrow’s Impressive Career
Saige Damrow verbally committed to Wisconsin volleyball when she was in eighth grade. Fast forward four years and she achieved the type of career most can only dream of. Damrow was 4x First Team All-Conference as well as Big East Conference Players of the Year. 3x she was voted to the First Team All-State. Additionally, Damrow won a state championship all four years of high school.
The 5 foot 9 outside hitter finished this season with 353 digs, 333 kills and 75 aces. Over her career, Damrow accumulated 1397 digs and 998 kills. Damrow is the No. 11 ranked recruit in the class of 2023 according to prepvolleyball.com. Additionally, Saige is ranked as the No. 2 libero in the class of 2023, her natural position.
There’s no denying that Damrow has had an immense amount of success on the court but she also excels in the classroom. She ended her high school career with a 3.83 and was also inducted into National Honor Society. Lastly, Damrow earned National High School Coaches Association Academic All-American honors. Coach Sheffield is getting a smart, skilled player.

Competition at the Position
Coming into next season, Damrow expects to compete for the libero position, which is her natural position. Getting on the court will have its challenges. Wisconsin started freshman, Gulce Guctekin at the libero position for much of the season. Guctekin tallied 415 digs and averaged 3.95 digs per set. Competing with Guctekin for the starting role will be tough but Damrow also had offseason knee surgery which will be another challenge she will have to overcome. When Saige inked her letter of intent to the Badgers, coach Sheffield said “she’s fearless and loves to compete.” Her competitive nature will be a welcome addition to the reigning conference champions.
